Today it has a population of about 150,000 people. It is the capital of the state of Guanajuato and also the home to the University of Guanajuato, which has a student population of 25,000. Students come from throughout Mexico and also from around the world to study Spanish, fine arts as well as computer and math sciences, mining engineering, law. This gives the city a wonderful youthful and intellectual "buzz" with many little cafes, restaurants, art galleries, theaters and shops. Tourists are of the kind that want to wander, explore or take some language classes. There is enough of an English population to make the city not totally unused to english...but it is a predominantly Spanish speaking community. The locals accept tourists and students graciously within their midst and the constant urging to buy by peddlers is not an issue. Cartel drug crime has not affected this city.
The city is serviced by the Leon Airport, about a 30 - 40 minute drive from Guanajuato. It can also be reach by excellent 1st class buses from the west coast, Guadalajara, Mexico City etc. as well as by highway.

Geographically, Guanajuato sits like a bowl - with the center of the city inside the bowl. We are on one lip of the bowl - so amazing views. Our house has a large patio facing the city, and a veranda on the second level (where we love to have our sundowners). Below us and to on side is a series of one story buildings which house a kindergarten complex - and so there is an unimpeded view of the city.
As a medieval hill city, it is composed of many small lanes many steps. Taxi's navigate most of these little streets in amazing ways. There is also a "commuter bus" which runs from the bottom of the hill, by the university, to the top connecting with the Panoramica road, which circles the city. Our house is the first alley below the Panoramica. Taxi's throughout the city cost about $2.50 - $4 a ride. The bus is $0.45 between the university and the top of the hill.
Our rates vary with the length of time and the season, so please contact us directly. The house is particularly good for those wanting a longer stay...such as mature students, professors, or people wishing to spend some time in this enchanting city while they look for their own homes.
We also have a manager with impeccable english, who is a great trouble shooter.
Cleaning services can also be arranged.
